A programme built on relationships, not transactions

Primary 8 is the final year of primary education and determines admission into secondary school. Many students who complete it never continue because their families cannot afford secondary school fees.

By selecting students during Primary 8, support arrives before this transition becomes a barrier — and the scholar and Bridge Partner grow together throughout secondary school.

Each partner school signs a Memorandum of Understanding. Schools identify academically talented Primary 8 candidates, verify financial need, recommend students on character and performance, assign a coordinating teacher, submit termly academic reports, and flag any concern affecting a student's progress.

Where possible, schools contribute to each scholarship through tuition discounts or their own scholarships, becoming active participants rather than simply receiving tuition payments.

Applications may be submitted through partner schools or during annual school visits. Selection considers academic performance, financial circumstances, commitment to education, discipline and behaviour, leadership potential, and recommendations from teachers and administrators.

Where necessary, verification includes home visits or discussions with community leaders so that scholarships reach students with genuine financial need.

Whenever possible, students are intentionally matched with a Bridge Partner from a different South Sudanese community. The purpose is not to highlight differences, but to create relationships that might never have existed otherwise.

Matching also considers shared interests and aspirations: a doctor may mentor a student interested in medicine, an engineer a student who enjoys mathematics, a software developer a student drawn to technology.

Students and Bridge Partners communicate through letters, emails, telephone calls, or online meetings. The Bridge South Sudan facilitates these interactions to ensure they are safe, respectful, and beneficial for both parties.

Partners congratulate students on results, encourage them through difficult times, and discuss careers. Students share report cards, write letters of appreciation, and seek guidance on educational decisions.

Throughout secondary school, Bridge Scholars take part in career guidance, university application support, public speaking workshops, entrepreneurship training, digital and financial literacy, leadership seminars, and community service projects.

Each term, partner schools provide attendance records, report cards, teacher evaluations, and confirmation of continued enrolment. Students facing academic or personal challenges receive counselling, mentoring, or additional support.

Tuition is paid directly to schools, schools issue official receipts, all donations are recorded, and annual financial reports are published.

Graduation does not end the programme. Every Bridge Scholar joins the Bridge Alumni Network and is invited to become a Bridge Partner in turn — a continuous cycle in which each generation educates and encourages the next.
